Embolus

Plural: Emboli

A particle or mass that can move through the blood vessels and is capable of clotting blood vessels. An embolus is typically comprised of clotted blood cells but it can also take the form of cholesterol plaque, fat globules, or gas bubbles.

An embolus often occurs as a small piece of blood clot that breaks off and travels through the circulatory system. This is called a thromboembolus.
